I always knew that books had a life of their own, but I was not prepared for the talking books that came at me this week! This past week, the Library Crew has been hard at work creating book reviews/recommendations using Chatterpix Kids. Check out a few of them and then come and well...check them out!! :)

![]() I just finished reading A Handful of Stars by Cynthia Lord. It. Was. Awesome. I was hooked from the first line: "The only reason I ever spoke to Salma Santiago was because my dog ate her lunch." A blind dog named Lucky pulls two girls into an unlikely friendship that will change the way they view others and themselves. In order to get Lucky the risky operation he needs to restore his sight, Lily and Salma join forces and vow to do whatever it takes...even if that means being braver than they have ever been before. I know they always say, "I laughed! I cried!". But to tell you the truth, I really did laugh and cry and I loved every minute of both! ![]() Maxwell, the pup-brarian, gives it two paws up! He says that this book is perfect for readers who enjoy realistic fiction that favors stepping out on faith, finding friendship in unexpected places, and of course a little bit of furry, puppy awesomeness thrown right in! ![]() So this week in the Ashley Library has been all about independence. Some of us have been taking our first steps in navigating the library alone and some have been venturing out just a little further into deeper territory. Kindergarten classes are learning all about shelf markers this week. Shelf Markers help us to hold our place in the shelf while we decide if it's a good book for us. They're awesome. I never thought my sanity could be saved by a piece of plastic my students now so lovingly call "Shelfies", but everyday I am thankful for their existence. We have learned a great song to the tune of The Hokey Pokey about how to use our Shelf Markers and, I must say, the kiddos are pretty good at this song. So good, I've been singing it pretty much 24/7. First grade is learning more about Spine Labels and Call Numbers. They have done a great job of creating a Call Number for my imaginary book. Although, I'm only a little offended that most of my classes didn't think I could/would ever write a book. Well....I'll just have to show them! I know who won't be on my Dedication Page! Just kidding! Second Grade has been working hard on the difference between fiction and non-fiction. They have been learning about non-fiction text features in class! We read Dex:The Heart of a Hero and Cocker Spaniels to compare and contrast the features of each. ![]() Today the Second Graders in Mrs. Thom's GT class came to visit the library for some research. We used QR codes to introduce a research unit on Dinosaurs! Rawr! Every QR code took us to a new type of source - video, book, article, database, and even to the dictionary! We learned a lot about dinosaurs today. We also learned a lot about research... ![]() We learned that research is about asking the right questions, looking in the right place, and never giving up. The answer that you are looking for isn't always in the first sentence! These kiddos will come back next week to finish their Dino Research Hunt and then be ready to dig in deeper to learn about specific types of dinosaurs. W |
