Parts of a book

Afternoon All!

Students in our Ashley Library have been working hard on reviewing and learning Parts of a Book and how those parts effect us as readers! The last few weeks have been a journey - Whew! We have traveled from exploring the physical parts of the book with Kinder to finding books independently on the shelves using the Call Numbers with Second.

Creating our own book allowed students to not only review the parts of a book they were already familiar with, but also see the process of creating those parts in action. During the creation process, students were introduced to new parts and were immediately able to put their own creative spin on how those should look in a book. My favorite was seeing Ashley students think through their own past reading experiences and ask to learn about parts of books we weren't planning on touching that day - what enthusiastic kiddos I get to hang out with each day!

Second Grade has really been working hard to prepare for Call Numbers and searching independently for specific books. On a normal basis, students browse for interesting titles or ask for help/direction when looking for a particular book or author. After a while, most have the library memorized for favorites! The last few weeks, however, Second Grade has been learning the purpose and structure of Spine Labels and Call Numbers. Last week, they searched the shelves independently for a specific Call Number and did great!

Busy Week!

It's been a crazy week here in the Ashley Library!

It all started with Kindergarten Checkout! This is truly one of my favorite things about the start of school - watching each kiddo choose their first book to take home with them. Some know their book immediately; snatching it up in a hug and squealing variations of "I want this one!", like they've just seen an old friend for the first time in years. Others are more cautious. They take their time and really look for a book that speaks to them.

The rest of our weekly kiddos sat down to remember their library numbers! We value independence and problem solving here in the Ashley Library.

Self Check In and Out is the first thing we learn how to do as a library patron and our library number is key. We also get to talk about personal information, information safety, and different parts of the computer! It's a really fun day!

I can't believe it has been a whole summer!

We kicked off the first week of school with some pretty stellar Eclipse viewing and kept the ball rolling with 3-5 grade library orientation!

I reunited with each class (and it felt so good)  to discuss library expectations, procedures, and set some personal library goals. We couldn't do that in just any 'ole way here in the Ashley Library though, so we busted out our favorite resource - FlipGrid!

Students were asked to respond to one or all of the topics at hand, depending on their grade level, with a video of their own making.

I was so proud of how much our kiddos remembered about library procedures! They were ready to check out materials after that quick and exciting review. They were also pumped because they had just set themselves a goal for the year. **I've seen the videos - some of those goals are quite awesome and very lofty**

THE COWS!!!!!!!!

What happens when a cow gets  tired?  It cowlapses!

In my school you can earn the Chick-Fil-A  stuffed cows by getting your family and friends to come to Chick-Fil-A and write your teachers name down on a slit of paper. Then the  class with the most teacher names will get to babysit the stuffed  cows for about a month. the library just had their Chick-Fil-A  a few weeks ago, and Mrs.Sargent's class won. the next Chick-Fil-A on the 15 of March. Earn a cow, read about a cow, just don't eat a cow! so come on down to Chick-Fil-A!

Unread books

Books are something that if you do not use they have to be put away. If you do read them they get to stay and be loved and used. Because they are not read we could try to look deeper into the shelves. You could also try new books to read instead of reading the same books all of the time. You would be surprised by how good it will feel.

3rd Grade Research!

It's that time of year again! Third Grade is gearing up for my favorite unit - research! We have had such a great time so far learning about the basis of research as well as several important elements of the research process.

We all began by reading Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty. This book taught us that research starts with great (and sometimes plentiful) questions and helped us to begin thinking about topics that are interesting to us. It was also a really cool way to open up discussion about the research process (how it begins and what they would need along the way).

Our next lesson focused on Copyright, Plagiarism, and Citation of sources. It was really fun to see our kiddos not just be able to create a citation for a source, but to understand the reasoning behind the citation creation! The presentation I used for this lesson, as well as the handout, it below.

Next, we tackled Quotes, Summaries, and Paraphrasing. Third Grade has been working diligently on summaries for quite a while and it showed during this lesson! We used an awesome foldable to help us take notes on the characteristics of each skill. Then, used our foldable to practice with an article from Pebble Go about Babe Ruth.

The hand out we used to practice as a whole group and small group is attached. The handout also covered the difference between paraphrasing and plagiarism.

Now that they have learned so much about research, they are ready to go. After today though, maybe we all need a refresher on shelf markers next??
