So this week in the Ashley Library has been all about independence. Some of us have been taking our first steps in navigating the library alone and some have been venturing out just a little further into deeper territory.
Kindergarten classes are learning all about shelf markers this week. Shelf Markers help us to hold our place in the shelf while we decide if it's a good book for us. They're awesome. I never thought my sanity could be saved by a piece of plastic my students now so lovingly call "Shelfies", but everyday I am thankful for their existence.
We have learned a great song to the tune of The Hokey Pokey about how to use our Shelf Markers and, I must say, the kiddos are pretty good at this song. So good, I've been singing it pretty much 24/7.
First grade is learning more about Spine Labels and Call Numbers. They have done a great job of creating a Call Number for my imaginary book. Although, I'm only a little offended that most of my classes didn't think I could/would ever write a book. Well....I'll just have to show them! I know who won't be on my Dedication Page! Just kidding!
Second Grade has been working hard on the difference between fiction and non-fiction. They have been learning about non-fiction text features in class! We read Dex:The Heart of a Hero and Cocker Spaniels to compare and contrast the features of each.
